High Elevation Plien Air

This is a landscape I did today on our little Neoburg outing, it is up the street from the KCmuseum on the edge of a cliff overlooking the train yards. This was done in gouac
he and took about 3 hours.
Below is a drawing from the Hyatt Regency hotel on crown center, we rode the elevator to the 39th floor where there was a window overlooking downtown kansas city. I am trying an
experiment with these posts If anyone is getting sick of these let me know and I will stop.

Day 11

Here is the quick painting I did this morning it was done in gouache and took about 2 and 1/2 hours. This is the cropped version the first one had the lamp in it, but it was distracting. I think I'm getting better at color, Im not neutralizing it as bad as I did in the past. I'm trying to put in about 18 hours a day of making art, my gosh its wearing me out, luckily I have a stock pile of moon pies I was given for Christmas they really take the edge off.

Dark Eldar Lhamaean

Today was a good day in the studio without safety incidents, this is a Lhamaean from the Dark Eldar (evil space elf like creatures) faction from the Warhammer 40k universe. I did this in my free time, it was done in photoshop.
Below is my morning still life which was done in gouache and took about 2 hours. It is a portrait of a Space Marine Land Raider also from the 40k universe.

Tuesdays Still Life

What a day in the studio, had a lamp fall and explode on me, almost started a fire, and temporarily blinded myself, but I managed to get a lot of work done. This is todays still life I again set up a still life to replicate the lighting situation for an illustration I am working on. I did this one in gouache and minus all the interruptions took about 2 hours.

Week Two, Still Life One

This is todays still life, it is a little strange looking. I tried to arrange all the objects in a fashion similar to an Illustration I'm working on. My hope was that if I could light it similarly to what it will be in the illustration it will help me have an idea how the light will work in the final illustration, we'll see how it works. I did this in gouache in about 2 hours.
This is my painting I did on Christmas morning, I did this on an i-pad using the brushes app and to approximately 2 hours. Below is the painting I did on Saturday, its an image of some of my books, it took 2 hours and was done in gouache.

In Studio Plein Aire

I decided to just do a painting of my work area, instead of a still life, I found it more interesting. I did this in gouache which I found makes me focus more on positive negatives and shape relations. It took about 2 hours.

Still life 4/ more Society of Illustrators

This is a still life I did this morning, I tried using gouache just to change things up. The purpose of these is so that I can hopefully get a new take on how to render objects and see light and color which I can then bring to my illustrations.
Below are some more sketches from society of Illustrators in New York done last week.

Still life 3

This is todays still life done in oil using a limited pallet And I tried to use thicker paint. It took around a two hours, and isn't really my most favorite piece. Some of the items aren't super recognizable that might be why. Below are some character clothing concepts for a story I'm working on dealing with a pair of detectives in the twenty second century.

Carnifex Versus Deathwing

This is a piece I did depicting a Tyranid Carnifex attempting to devour a Deathwing terminator. When at the last minute the mortally wounded terminator using his chainfist slashes the soft neck tissue of the ferocious creature. This was done in photoshop over a pencil sketch.

Below is the second still life of hopefully many I plan on doing every morning over this christmas break. Again like the previous one I used no blue, relying on a neutralized black to get the greens, it is oil on canvas and took about 1 1/2 hours.

New York City Sketch Book

These are some sketches from a recent trip to New York, from which I am just now starting to recover from. Everything happened so quickly it's not entirely clear to me exactly what happened, but I do know this, it changed the way I will look at, and create art forever.
